Practical Clearance Advice

Should You Bag Up Rubble and Tiles for Collection?

The short answer is yes—if you can. Putting broken bricks, chipped mortar, and old bathroom tiles into heavy-duty woven rubble sacks makes manual loading much safer, faster, and cleaner than shovelling up a loose heap. However, the biggest mistake people make is filling the bags right to the top.

The Golden Rule: Only Half-Fill Your Bags

Masonry, concrete, ceramics, and wet soil are deceptively dense. A standard builder's rubble sack filled to the brim with broken bricks or ceramic floor tiles can easily top 40kg to 50kg. Not only will the bag split when lifted, but it also exceeds safe manual-handling limits. Always stop filling when the sack is half full—aiming for roughly 20kg to 25kg per bag so one person can lift it cleanly into the van without straining their back or showering your driveway in sharp shards.

Why Bagging Beats a Loose Pile Every Time

With 15 years of experience clearing renovation debris and builders waste across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, we have shifted every kind of pile imaginable. While we never mind getting stuck into the heavy lifting, having your rubble bagged properly makes a massive difference on collection day:

  • 1
Faster Wait-and-Load Turnaround: When we pull up outside a property on a tight street or shared driveway, speed matters. Grabbing pre-bagged sacks and walking them straight onto the vehicle takes a fraction of the time compared to shovelling loose gravel, broken plaster, and mortar by hand into tubs.
  • 2
Protection for Your Drive, Patio, and Indoors: Loose piles of smashed wall tiles and render get ground into block paving, scratch tarmac, and wash into gullies when it rains. If we are carrying waste through a hallway or down a narrow Victorian jitty, woven bags keep sharp porcelain edges and brick dust away from your walls and floors.
  • 3
A Cleaner Final Sweep-Up: We always sweep the working area before we leave, whether we are handing a site back to a tradesperson or clearing a homeowner's front drive. When rubble is bagged as you knock it out, there is far less fine mortar dust left staining your slabs.

Real job example: Bagged renovation rubble, timber offcuts, and bulky items stacked at the front of a drive, loaded directly into our vehicle and swept clean without needing a road skip permit.

Which Bags Should You Use (And Which to Avoid)

Not all bags can cope with sharp masonry. If you put chipped bathroom tiles or broken concrete into thin kitchen bin liners, they will slice straight through the plastic the moment we lift them.

Best Choice: Woven Polypropylene Sacks

Available at any builders' merchant or DIY store for a few pounds a roll. Woven rubble sacks resist tearing when poked by sharp ceramic tile corners, nails, or rough mortar. Half-fill them so the top can be gripped firmly with two hands.

Good Alternative: Thick Plastic Rubble Sacks & Gorilla Tubs

Heavy-gauge polythene builders sacks work well for plasterboard offcuts, dry soil, and bricks, provided they are not overfilled. Flexible plastic builder trugs with two handles are also brilliant if you want to tip the load and keep your tubs afterwards.

A Quick Warning on One-Tonne "Dumpy" Bags

Customers often fill a giant one-tonne bulk bag on their driveway with bricks and soil and ask if we can lift it in one go. Because we operate a manual wait-and-load van clearance service rather than a crane lorry, a full one-tonne bag has to be shovelled out into smaller loads by hand before it can go on the truck. You can still pile light timber or bagged rubble inside a dumpy bag to keep your drive tidy, just avoid filling a bulk bag loose with heavy hardcore.

How to Separate Your Renovation Waste for Easy Loading

All commercial and DIY waste we collect is taken directly to licensed commercial transfer stations across Nottinghamshire, where materials are weighed, sorted, and recycled. Keeping a few key materials separate when you bag up saves time and keeps everything compliant:

Material Type How to Prepare It Weight / Handling Tip
Bricks, Concrete & Hardcore Half-fill woven rubble sacks Stop at knee height (approx. 20–25kg max)
Bathroom & Kitchen Tiles Double-bag or use tough woven sacks Broken porcelain is razor-sharp; never use thin bin bags
Plasterboard & Gypsum Bag offcuts separately from brick rubble Transfer stations process gypsum separately from hardcore
Timber, Doors & Skirting Stack neatly alongside your bags Knock down or flatten protruding rusty nails where possible
Asbestos or Hazardous Items Do not mix with general rubble We only handle non-hazardous waste; old artex or cement sheets must be checked first
