How Should I Prepare for a Garage Clearance?
You do not need to bag everything up or drag heavy workbenches onto the drive before we arrive—our team handles all the heavy lifting. However, spending twenty minutes separating what you want to keep, setting aside liquids like old paint or garden chemicals, and leaving clear vehicle access on the day makes the job much faster, safer, and completely straightforward.
The Short Answer: What You Actually Need to Do
After 15 years of clearing garages across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, the biggest mistake we see homeowners make is injuring their backs trying to move everything onto the driveway beforehand. Leave the heavy lifting to us. Here is all you really need to do before we turn up:
- ✓ Create a clear "Keep Zone": Move tools, bikes, or sentimental boxes into the house or mark a taped-off corner of the garage.
- ✓ Pull out liquids and hazardous items: Set aside wet paint tins, weedkillers, engine oil, and car batteries so they do not get mixed into the general load.
- ✓ Check locks and doors: Make sure you have the padlock key or that the up-and-over door isn't jammed shut by fallen timber inside.
- ✓ Clear the driveway or access path: Move cars off the drive so our vehicle can reverse right up to the garage doors for fast loading.
1. Separate Your "Keep" Pile Clearly
When a garage has been stacked floor-to-ceiling for ten years with cardboard boxes, broken lawnmowers, old shelving, and timber offcuts, it is surprisingly easy for valuable hand tools or family keepsakes to blend in with the rubbish. Once our team starts loading, we work briskly to get your space cleared and swept down.
If you are only having a partial clearance, the safest approach is to take the items you are keeping right out of the garage and put them in the house, shed, or back garden before we arrive. If they are too heavy to move—such as a chest freezer you still use or a heavy metal tool chest—group them into one corner, throw an old dust sheet over them, or stick a bright piece of masking tape on the front marked "KEEP". We will always walk through the garage with you before we lift a single item so everyone is 100% clear on what goes and what stays.
2. Set Aside Old Paint Tins, Oils, and Garden Chemicals
Almost every garage we clear has a forgotten shelf at the back holding rusty tins of gloss paint, half-used bottles of creosote, old weedkiller, white spirit, or a flat car battery. Under UK environmental regulations and the GOV.UK Hazardous Waste guidelines, licensed commercial waste transfer stations strictly prohibit liquid paints, solvents, motor oils, and hazardous chemicals from entering standard domestic and trade waste loads.
What We Can Take Straight Away
- • Completely empty or bone-dry metal and plastic paint tubs
- • Old timber, shelving, workbenches, and MDF offcuts
- • Broken garden machinery (drained of petrol and oil)
- • Old bicycles, fitness machines, and camping gear
- • Bagged clutter, cardboard, carpets, and ceramic tiles
- • White goods, fridges, freezers, and old tumble dryers
What Needs Separating First
- • Tins of wet liquid paint, varnish, or wood preservative
- • Old engine oil, brake fluid, and jerrycans of petrol
- • Garden pesticides, weedkillers, and pool chemicals
- • Lead-acid car batteries and gas canisters / patio gas
- • Corrugated asbestos garage roof sheets or cement panels
Practical tip for half-full paint tins: If you only have a tiny bit of emulsion left in the bottom of a tub, take the lid off a few days beforehand and stir in some sawdust, soil, or cat litter so it dries out completely solid. Once it is rock-hard, it is no longer classed as liquid waste. For wet chemicals, oils, or gas bottles, set them safely to one side—these normally need taking to a local household recycling centre (such as the Redfield Road site in Lenton or your nearest Nottinghamshire County Council recycling centre) under a resident permit.
3. Check for Asbestos Roofs or Hidden Hazards
Across many 1930s, 1950s, and 1970s semi-detached properties in Nottinghamshire, older sectional concrete garages were built with corrugated cement roofs, rainwater guttering, or internal partition boards that contain bonded asbestos. As long as an asbestos roof is intact and staying in place while we simply clear the contents underneath it, there is no problem at all.
However, if old corrugated roof sheets have broken and fallen into the rubbish pile inside the garage, let us know when you call to book. We are a non-hazardous waste clearance company and do not handle asbestos abatement, so spotting suspect cement sheets early saves any delays on collection day. Similarly, if you know there are panes of broken greenhouse glass, rusty nails in loose floorboards, or mouse droppings at the back of the garage, just give the lads a quick heads-up when we arrive.
4. Clear Driveway Access and Check Door Locks
Because we operate a wait-and-load van clearance service rather than dropping a static skip on your drive for a week, our vehicle only needs to be parked outside while we actively load your waste. The closer we can reverse to your garage doors, the quicker the job goes.
- Move cars off the drive: If your garage sits at the end of a long side driveway (common with 1930s suburban semis), moving household cars onto the road before we arrive lets us back right up to the door and protects your vehicles from any dust or bulky items being carried past.
- Shared drives and rear jitties: If your garage is accessed via a shared driveway, a rear service lane, or a tight Victorian terrace street with resident parking bays, just let your neighbours know we will be loading for an hour or so.
- Test the garage door: Up-and-over metal garage doors have a habit of jamming if an old broom handle or stack of boxes has tipped against the internal runner tracks. If the main door refuses to open, check that the side personal door is unlocked and that any rusty padlocks have been freed with a spray of WD-40 the day before.
- Disconnect wired-in appliances: We are happy to lift out old washing machines, chest freezers, and tumble dryers, provided they are unplugged, defrosted, and disconnected from mains water pipes or hardwired wall spurs beforehand.
5. How to Get the Most Accurate Price Before We Start
You do not need to empty the garage to find out what the clearance will cost. When you call us on 0115 647 8283, just open the garage door in daylight and describe roughly how full it is—for example, whether it is waist-high down one wall or packed solid from back to front—and mention if there are particularly heavy materials like rubble, paving slabs, or wet soil mixed in.
You can also send a couple of quick photos through our official Facebook page, or we can pop out to inspect larger loads in person. Once we finish loading every item into our vehicle, we sweep the concrete floor clean so you can park your car straight back inside or hand the keys over to an estate agent the very same afternoon.
Common Garage Prep Questions
Straightforward answers on how we work on the day and what happens to your garage clutter once we load it.
Do I need to put loose garage clutter into bin bags first?
No, you do not have to bag everything up unless it helps you sort through small personal items. Our team carries heavy-duty tubs, sacks, and shovels on the van to clear loose clutter, broken pots, and floor debris quickly.
Do I need to dismantle old shelving or workbenches?
If freestanding racking or wooden workbenches fit out through the garage doors, we will lift them straight out as they are. If old shelving is screwed into the brickwork and you want it taken down, just let us know when booking so we allow time to unbolt or break it down.
Are you fully insured to work inside my garage and across my drive?
Yes. Anthony Gough Waste Removals is fully insured for both residential and commercial clearances, giving you complete peace of mind while we carry bulky items past walls, doorways, and driveways.
What happens to the waste after you clear my garage?
All waste is transported directly to authorised, licensed commercial waste transfer stations where timber, scrap metal, cardboard, and rubble are sorted for recycling and diverted from landfill in full compliance with your Duty of Care.
